Im Rahmen des Englischunterrichts zum Thema „Global Challenges“ besuchte ein Englischkurs der EF die Ausstellung „Müll“ im Dortmunder U. Die Ausstellung setzt sich auf vielfältige Weise mit den Ursachen und Folgen unseres weltweiten Abfallaufkommens auseinander. Im Anschluss an die Exkursion verfassten die Schülerinnen und Schüler englischsprachige Artikel, in denen sie ihre Eindrücke von der Ausstellung und die gesellschaftliche Relevanz des Themas reflektierten. Der folgende Auszug aus dem Artikel des Schülers Gentian gibt einen Einblick in diese Reflexion:
“People are often not aware of the impact waste has on our lives. It doesn’t take much to realize the importance of this issue, but I think people can relate to it more when they are informed in a powerful and expressive way. That’s why our teacher decided to take our English class to an exhibition about waste at the Dortmunder U. Walking in, we already felt a sense of guilt. Hallways with ceilings filled with trash, such as plastic bottles, packaging, and old objects, immediately created a gloomy atmosphere. It was dark and even a little frightening. Strange sounds coming from the installations made us feel as if the trash, although broken and damaged, was still alive. As we moved further into the exhibition, we were confronted with massive installations made of e-waste. Seeing mountains of old smartphones, broken monitors, and tangled cables really brought home how much waste we produce without thinking. […] Leaving the exhibition, I couldn’t help but think about my own electronic devices. It made me realize that we need to change our mindset. Instead of constantly buying the latest technology, we should repair and recycle what we already have.”
